I was charged 17 Non Sufficient Fund fees totaling $544 between October 2023 and January 2024 without proper notification. When I opened my account, I specifically asked if transactions would just decline with no fees if I had insufficient funds, and I was assured that I’d never be charged NSF fees. That turned out to be false.
SDCCU relied only on physical mail to notify me, even though I had submitted a travel notice saying I am overseas. They also transferred money between my accounts without notifying me to pay the fees off.
I made multiple calls to supervisors and a branch manager to resolve this, but they refused to take responsibility, blaming me for not setting up email alerts—something they never mentioned when I opened the account.
I’ve now filed a formal complaint with the CFPB because SDCCU refuses to handle this fairly. If you’re considering banking with them, be aware of their poor communication and lack of accountability.

After visiting this branch, 4 times in the last 2 weeks, canceling my debit card due to fraud, my own fault, the customer service by Brianne and Jovan was exceptional! They made a stressful time easier, with taking the time reviewing my account and keeping me updated on when I should receive my new card.
This was a complete change from my experience before at this branch! I appreciate their professionalism and genuine kindness and making my day better.
SDCCU is lucky to have them as representatives and I just wanted to thank them both!

On two different occasions, I reached out to SDCCU support to help me. Neither time was the support agent able to resolve my issues.

I just have had so many interactions with other banks where they were able to help me immediately and resolve my problems. I would think a company that I literally pay to hold my money would have my back more.

I would rather stick with the big name brand banks than this credit union...

Oh yea, the ATM always says out of service so they make you go in and stand in line just to take out some cash.

Branch staff is not completely trained and/or give you the wrong information.

I have not received my new card so I went into the branch two days ago to ask about this. The representative in the far right cubicle told me don’t worry it’ll be shipped out next month because it’s still too early. He said if I don’t receive it by the middle of next month to come in then. Guess what? Today I found out I can’t use my current card aside from at the ATM or in person at stores because they actually did ship out my new card last week. And there’s nothing to do until I get my new card and activate it. All customer service said was well the branch staff can’t see everything we can so he didn’t know your card was shipped out. This makes no sense. If they can’t see everything then they shouldn’t confidently speak of things they are not 100 percent sure of. This EXACT situation happened before a few years ago so I was already paranoid but the branch representative told me they do things differently now so not to worry.

In a separate incident about a month ago they nearly froze my account when I was disputing a triple charge. I went in to dispute being charged threes times by a restaurant. The representative that usually sits in the far left part of the counter told me since it’s unauthorized use he has to freeze my account while they investigate and it could take 7-10 days. I couldn’t go that long without access so I went outside to think about what to do. FORTUNATELY when I came back in I got in line and ended up with a different representative at the far right part of the counter. She said all I had to do was dispute the extra charges and sign a paper. Had I not ended up at her desk the other guy would’ve frozen my account.

I feel like this is a management failure. Management should make sure their representatives are well trained so they don’t give their clients wrong information. Especially when that information can put these clients in a serious financial bind now.

Also, the response from customer service just telling me to use another card… what about people that don’t have other cards?

Maybe I should be more knowledgeable but the entire reason I chose this place was because it’s not supposed to be big bank banking.

This branch, and SDCCU in general have been nothing but a disappointment in the last 7 years. They've done absolutely nothing to help me in times of crisis. A credit union designed to help locals that seems to do the exact opposite.

Stopped in to re-open my closed account. The Rep Alexander Gregory Fabiola acted like he was a beginner. He provided poor customer service. He kept telling me I needed $40 to open a new account. I handed him a cashiers check from my credit union for 40k and he looked like he had never seen a cashier's check for that amount. He kept saying I need to go talk to my manager. They both were dumb. I walked right out b/c I already have two other accounts with a credit union but wanted to move some of my money. Never want to use one or two. Always had three accounts. They need to be re trained and stop trying to judge a person on their race.
Also maybe they can not open several accounts in such a large amounts so they feel un privileged šŸ¤”. Very unprofessional!!

The branch itself is not terrible, despite the long lines and broken ATM. But, the organization is something you should avoid at all cost. The people they employ outside the branches are either unreachable or extremely rude. Additionally, I’ve noted no benefits banking with SDCCU besides dealing with the attitude of their associates. I highly recommend, as others have said, sticking with bigger banks.
