I hired Burkland Associates to help our family-owned business transition from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online. We have been in business since 1973, and while I understand that Burkland focuses on startups, we had been informed their team could help us with the significant accounting overhaul we needed as an established business. Unfortunately, our experience was far from what we expected.

From the very start, working with Emily Felceti was frustrating and unprofessional. Despite making it clear that our books were outdated and our accounting needs were complex, Emily’s attitude was dismissive, and she provided no meaningful support. When my mother joined the conversation, Emily became increasingly rude. There was only one virtual meeting between the three of us during which Emily appeared overwhelmed with the task of training small business owners, and she never provided the training we needed. Afterward, Emily canceled every meeting we tried to schedule and failed to follow through on any commitments.

Due to Emily's lack of responsiveness, I eventually reached out to Karina Kongo, who had helped us during the initial stages of the transition. Karina was helpful, but by this point, we had already been left without the support we desperately needed.

Burkland unexpectedly dropped us as clients in the middle of our work without completing the transition, leaving us in a difficult position. We did not pay the final invoice because the work was left unfinished, and we were left to manage the transition ourselves. Burkland then turned the unpaid invoice over to collections, and the correspondence included an internal email from Emily, in which she inaccurately and unprofessionally described us as “very rude and difficult to train.” In reality, there was only one meeting, and during that time, Emily was neither helpful nor responsive to our needs.

While I believe that Burkland Associates may have strong team members suited to startup-focused projects, our experience was a significant disappointment. Emily's lack of professionalism, poor communication, and mishandling of the transition was a major setback for our business. As a small family-owned business, this left us in a very challenging situation. We were wildly frustrated and disappointed with how this relationship was handled, and I would not recommend Burkland Associates to established businesses seeking reliable support.

Burkland pride itself of providing accounting services for startups. After having worked with them for two years, the conclusion is that their services are way below professional quality and generally accepted industry standards and practices. Katrina, the accountant we were assigned was either on leave, had issues with power outages or other family outages. Most of the time sending her an email would result in an automatic reply saying that she may respond in a week. When trying to have weekly meetings with her, she would never be in front of her computer ready to sit down and walk you through reconciliations and issues, by contrary she would mostly be on the phone when driving indicating that she was busy with other stuff. The biggest problem is that as a startup you rely on the accountant you hire and trust that they know what they need to do. It turned out that her reconciliations were never really reviewed properly and updated in Quickbooks as they should have. She indicated via emails that she would take care of issues but when asked to provide evidence it was either a wish-washy job or something completely different. When these issues were brought up to the management, instead of trying to find proactive solutions this response was “take it or leave it”.
The most recent issue was that Burkland was listed as point of contact to the california department of tax and fee administration who reached out via phone and left messages to them to request additional information. They did not return the calls nor did they inform us as customers so by the time we received a written notice it was already too late to provide timely responses and the result was that we were penalized. The lady from CA tax and fee administration provided me with clear dates of the calls and Burkland denied getting them. In fact this was an issue that started in April and Burkland indicated that it addressed it when it actually occurs that it was not properly addressed initially and then dropped off the radar for proper followup.not only that but when I brought these issues up Burkland turned around and asked us if we filed the proper accounting and tax documentation which we paid them to advise and do!!!
In short, this company can not be trusted to handle your financials or provide services that come close to meet industry standards. Take your money, time and business to some other place that is more serious and respectful of your time and truly supportive of what you are trying to do.
