I was rear-ended by an Amica-insured driver, and the experience dealing with their claims process was frustrating. It took them an entire month just to issue a check so I could start repairs on my vehicle. Meanwhile, they provided me with the cheapest rental car possible—far from comparable to my own vehicle. The lack of urgency and poor customer service made the process unnecessarily difficult. If you're looking for an insurance company that values its customers, I would recommend looking elsewhere.

Update: I hate that it is this way, but after going full-Karen in my review, Amica contacted me and said they took another look into my claim and found a letter they had sent in dec. 2023. It said they’d pay for our windshield. So, they apologized and said they’d reimburse us. I considered adding a star, but because of how much they jerked us around initially and only helped when we made their actions public, I’m leaving it at 1 star.

Original review:
Amica betrayed us after 5 loyal years.

TL;DR
Amica said they'd cover our windshield replacement and then 10 months later said we owed safelight for the full $850. Whether they mislead us on purpose or not doesn't change the fact that they told us one thing and then went back on their word. Instead of apologizing for dropping the ball and then making any effort to make it right, they have ended communication and basically said "good luck." Super disappointed. They won't own up to their own blunders, and they're looking for any excuse to stick you with the bill. If you think they have your back, think again.

I've had Amica for homeowners insurance since 2019 and auto insurance since 2021. Last year, my wife and I bought a new car for her. It was about 15 years newer than her previous car, so we decided to add on glass coverage. At some point we went to Safelight to get a windshield crack repaired, and were informed that we'd need a total windshield replacement. We called Amica and after some back and forth, they said we'd be covered and so safelight went ahead with the replacement. That was December of 2023. About a month ago, in October of 2024, we received a notice that we owed $850 for our windshield replacement from December TEN MONTHS AGO. This made no sense because they said we had glass coverage and that they would pay for it.

Since then, I have spent over an hour and a half on the phone with various representatives. Half the time I'll talk to someone for 20 minutes and then they'll say something like, "oh that's a claims problem, let me transfer you." I've been transferred to policy, glass coverage, claims, or whatever other bull crap. Each time, I have to re-recount this story. Most recently, I talked to someone for about 40 minutes if you include hold times. I told him that we were confused because Amica said they would cover it, and that we would NOT have gotten our windshield replaced at that time if we knew we had to pay full price. We only decided to do it because Amica said we didn't need to pay. He said that if someone told us that, they could go back through their phone calls since they record them. After being on hold for a few minutes, he said he had talked with his manager and they only keep records for phone calls for 90 days. Well isn't that convenient for them that they waited TEN MONTHS so that there is no record they lied and said they'd cover it. He said he would forward this issue to another department manager (he couldn't help me, that was a ______ issue. Not sure why we spent 30 minutes on an issue he couldn't resolve, but it is what it is). He also said they'd probably do nothing about it because the other department said they didn't want to pay for it anymore. I have waited over a week to hear back and nothing but radio silence. They have ghosted me probably because they're afraid I'll go full Karen on every unsuspecting manager.

Overall, I'm shocked at how poorly they have handled this situation. Barring them misleading us, again intentionally or not, they have failed to own up, apologize, or fix anything. I can't believe that after 5 loyal years, they couldn't care less about me as a customer. They made promises which they have not kept, and they made sure no evidence was left that they ever said they'd help. What's the refund policy on the last year of BS and lies? I guess we're just SOL because they didn't communicate sooner when they still had a record of what they told us they'd pay for. From one procrastinator to another, why don't you own up and pay for your own mistakes instead of bending over backwards not to help?

Buyer beware. This is the worst insurance company on the planet. RUN! Don't walk. RUN! They sell themselves as a caring company but dropped our family's car insurance after my husband had a minor accident (a fender bender). Worse yet, NO NOTIFICATION, and our family was driving for 7 weeks with no car insurance - unbeknown to us. Can you imagine what would have happened if we had an accident during that time? We could have lost everything...or even ended up in jail. I am shocked, outraged, saddened and feel completely victimized by the insensitive and horrific customer service and failure of this horrendous company to care enough to even pick up the phone to inform us of their decision to drop us. By the way, we had both home owners and insurance coverage under one policy. That didn't matter to them. They could have easily made an effort to contact myself to say, "hey we're dropping your husband's policy, would you like to take him off of yours so that YOU can keep insurance on your vehicle?" but no effort was made. So both of us, driving children around, had no insurance on either vehicle. As customers, we all need to jump through hurdles and sign a BILLION forms to get insurance....but these crooked companies like Amica will drop you with no notification like soulless inhumane uncaring thieves once you have a minor accident. Isn't that what insurance is for? If you are at all contemplating getting any form of insurance from this company, do yourself and your family a favor... RUN! This company doesn't care about you or the safety of your family. They are horrific and should be out of business. And shame on anyone working for this company. I hope you you all know you're working for the devil.

I've been a loyal Amica customer for over 10 years for all my insurance needs. Never a claim or any issue on my insurance. Then this year for no reason they increased my auto insurance by 40% (Near the max allowed by CA regulators. Surprised they would be so greedy with their loyal customers).

The only good thing is that Amica at least gave me 2 months notice so that I could shop around and find out that I could get even better coverage at a lower price than even my last year rates.

I added my husband to my policy. He got in a single accident. Amica sent me a letter 3 weeks before my renewal date that they will not be renewing my insurance due to my husband's one accident. They said I could keep my coverage and exclude him, but my existing policy would cancel and I'd have to start a new one which was higher and they wanted half down. I asked if they could just exclude my husband after he gets his own policy this way I could keep my policy without all the extra fees. He told me in California that's not allowed. Never heard of this. Also said that half down is a California thing. Again, never heard of that.
Horrible company.

I am currently shopping around for life insurance and they have good rates and their customer service I experienced was attentive and helpful. Natalie Moore was my representative and she was awesome. She said she would call me back within a week to follow up and she did. No complains here!

The negative reviews do raise a red flags though so I am currently still looking around but I have not counted Amica out.

I was rear ended by an Amica member. My car was no longer drivable. The agent never even reached out. I called in repeatedly asking for things to be done and it was pulling teeth. At one point she tried to tell me that they were rescinding my rental even though my car wasn’t fixed. Not drivable. The body shop she picked couldn’t work on my car. I had to call around body shops to find someone to fix it and then she suddenly changed her mind and I got to keep the rental. They did not reimburse my parking tickets for my car being on the road unfixed until it was able to be towed by them (weeks). Very difficult and unfortunate experience. I have been rear ended before and the experience with the other insurance company was nothing like this

I see the negative reviews, but honestly, this insurance company has blown me away with their level of customer care. White glove treatment is the best way to describe my experience. I don’t think being a perfect driver is necessary to get coverage (my wife had a fender bender a few years back), but you do need to demonstrate that you’re a safe and responsible one. Limiting coverage to good drivers is one way in how they keep our premiums low. So low, that they saved me $100 a month over SF, who I was with for over 30 years. After switching to Amica, within 3 weeks our car was totaled by a hit and run. They didn’t just offer me exceptionally more for our payout than what I could get for trade-in, but increased it when I explained the excellent condition of the car prior to loss. My only regret is that I didn’t switch to Amica years ago.

And, I notice that Amica responds to the negative reviews here. That’s not the kind of thing you see from a “bad” company. No one’s perfect, but I’ve seen them do their best to take care of their members.
