I was a customer of Central Virginia Insurance for about 5 years, with an equine policy that I never used until recently. During that time, I paid all invoices on time and never filed a claim. They keep your card on file and automatically charge you when it’s time to pay the invoice, which I dislike since my card often changes. The worst part is there’s no way to pay your invoice online on your own—it feels like the company hasn’t even stepped into the 21st century.

However, this isn’t my main issue. The real problem came when I filed a claim after my horse sustained an eye injury. I contacted my agent, Jennifer, to ask how to file the claim. She gave me the claims adjuster’s phone number, but didn’t ask about the nature of my claim or offer any guidance. About 48 hours later, the claims adjuster responded, stating that they would only pay for expenses incurred within 30 days prior to the claim being reported, which is highlighted in my policy. I brought my horse home on December 11th and filed the claim on January 6th, so I was essentially “too late” according to their rules.

This frustrated me deeply. I had an active policy, had never filed a claim before, and the 30-day stipulation is clearly an arbitrary number they’ve strategically put in place to avoid covering claims. I’ve paid thousands of dollars to this company over the years and now can’t get them to even consider a claim because I was outside their 30-day window.

My agent didn’t fight for me at all. She simply told me there was nothing she could do, adding that she would have guided me if I had contacted her sooner. Well, I did ask her how to file the claim, but she didn’t offer any help at that point. This experience has made it clear to me that Central Virginia Insurance is insincere and a waste of money. I sure they would find any excuse not to cover a mere $5 vet bill for my horse.

I was a customer of Central Virginia for over 10 years. I had an equine policy in place and previously had nothing but good things to say. They helped me navigate several major medical claims and were always helpful with renewals and answering any questions. However, over the past few years the level of customer service has severely declined. This year I was quoted an incorrect amount for the annual premium, had to follow up with billing numerous times, and was never mailed a copy of my policy. Most recently, when my horse was having neurologic issues, I reached out to my agent I received almost no guidance on how to navigate through an incredibly difficult situation. After the passing of my horse and receiving $0 in major medical and $0 in mortality, I was then sent an invoice 2 months later for coverage that was no longer active. When I asked my agent why I was being charged the response was "I wish I made the rules, but I do not." I expressed how upset I was with the lack of explanation and sympathy given my recent loss, but the agent never bothered to give me a call or explain further. I then called one of the owners, Pam, and explained the situation. She said my agent would be in touch to apologize and further explain the charges. Unfortunately, even after escalating my concerns, the agent decided not to call, but managed to find time to run my credit card on file. As someone who works in customer service, I'm not one to write negative reviews without trying to resolve the issue directly with the company, but I have been completely shocked and disappointed by the complete lack of initiative and concern.
In addition, we used this company for a farm policy. We had 1 claim in 2 years and then were immediately dropped. I asked my agent to provide some alternative companies, but she never reached out or provided any recommendations. After 3 weeks of searching on my own, I ended up finding a farm insurance policy through Traveler's Agribusiness with more coverage for around $1,200 less per year and their customer service has been great.
I always enjoyed Central VA since they were a smaller and local company that seemed to really care about their clients. It's unfortunate they have become extremely transactional and no different than any of the other big name insurance companies. I will no longer be working with them and do not recommend them for any equine or farm insurance needs.
