The John Stewart Company (JSCO) had me wrongfully evicted from my home of 42+ years because I dared to be the one resident who continually held them accountable for their misdeeds. After being elected to the Board of Directors of Glenridge Apartments Cooperative in 2010 I immediately found some outright illegal wrongdoing on our books. They were using our bank accounts and writing a check made out to "GLENRIDGE" from one of our accounts, and then depositing the check into another account claiming this was for "office space" and the "Board Room". That is a ledger entry, NOT a physical check to be written in any way shape or form. This was done for a number of reason...all beneficial to JSCO and not to the Cooperative. They charged extra fees for writing the check, depositing the check, and increasing the gross receipts they charge their massive management fee from. The last fee doesn't go toward any of their employee salaries or anything of the sort. It was over $18,000.00 every 23 days for just being there. The Co-Op pays for ALL of JSCO's employees salaries, benefits, vacation, etc. Nothing comes out of JSCO's pockets. They siphon off as much money from HUD assisted properties as they can; hire incompetent people to do their maintenance; with managers who don't even leave their offices to regularly inspect the condition of the property as their contracts state they are suppose to.
After holding their feet to many fires they had my house raided by the police and I was arrested for the first time EVER in my 53 years on trumped up drug charges. I was also a Board member at that time.
Without ever asking me about what happened or what the outcome was or anything the property manager Barbara Goodie had a 10-day-to-quit notice placed on my door that cited the arrest report as the reason for notice. Four days later we had our Board meeting, and in the Executive Session (without management) I stated that the arrest was all BS and that I would be exonerated from all charges. Just let me stay in my home until Due Process takes place and then decide what to do if I'm not exonerated. The Board voted Unanimously to allow me to stay until my case was concluded; told management to stop any proceedings against me until the case was over, and told management to check with the Board then for any action going forward.
Long story short - Management, along with the illegal President of the Board of Directors (because he does not reside on the property as the by-laws and California Law states that he should - he sublets it and has for 20 years) Mr Fred Butler, esq. colluded together with JSCO's lawyers to have me evicted after I protested at a Board meeting that Mr. Butler signed a $6,000.00 check he was not authorized to for things the property didn't need, and the fact that he is an illegitimate board member for reasons stated above.
Mr Butler then directed JSCO to have their lawyers force me out any way they could. With the property manager Barbara Goodie signing off and stating that I was guilty of everything found on the arrest report when it hadn't even been through a preliminary hearing yet, and the lawyers from JSCO going against the directive that the Board had voted on to wait until my case was over I was backed into a wall that I had no money to hire a lawyer with. My home of 42 years was taken from me, I lost everything I owned and had collected over a lifetime because I had no income and was on Section 8 and Food Stamps at the time they were doing this to me and I couldn't afford the storage fees. My little dog and best friend for 11 1/2 years came down with cancer after we were forced t live in a van on the streets after the eviction. I had to put him down and was all alone with nothing because I had the nerve (or stupity) to speak out the truth to the corrupt powers that be.
This is one of the most unscrupulous property management company's in the nation..
