My husband and I are so thankful to have Old Dominion in our financial corner. In today’s business world where the invaluable tenets of consistent customer service and ongoing mission dedication are sadly low or outright missing, Old Dominion’s willingness to listen to our needs, craft a detailed and comprehensive financial plan, and routinely reassess and adjust as circumstances change all in pursuit of our fiscal wellbeing is exemplary!

If anyone is looking for local, attentive, trustworthy, and successful financial stewards of your hard-earned money, we heartily encourage you to contact and invest with Old Dominion. We’re confident that you’ll be glad you did as are we. Sincerely, Lisa & Jamie Lupton

After working on my accounts on my own for the past 12 years, I decided it was time to meet with a financial advisor. I had retirement accounts for my husband and I, savings money not making money, and accounts for my children which were staying stagnant. I reached out to Gary Whetzel and was able to set up a meeting shortly after reaching out. Gary listened to all of my short term and long term goals and helped me move all my money into accounts that made sense for our current and future lifestyle. Gary also answered all of my questions - and there were a lot - and in a short amount of time. I am a teacher and wanted to make sure I had wrapped up all of the meetings and money moving in the summer - within 3 weeks this was complete. We have already seen our investments make money, something our savings account had not done for a decade.

Gary has reached out multiple times since meeting to keep me posted on the status of my accounts. He is respectful, personable, and kind and I look forward to working with him for many years to come. If you're feeling overwhelmed or unsure of how to best manage your money, reach out to Old Dominion. If nothing else, having the peace of mind that someone else is there to help is a great feeling!

I have worked with Bruce for close to 30 years and have been thrilled with all levels of service. I can go to his office or he will come to our house. His financial advice and investments have allowed me to put two kids through college and spending “none” of my money. I realize it was my money but it was only money we had in their college funds and never had to touch other sources of our money. I’m a teacher and my wife is a nurse so we have solid incomes but nothing extravagant. He had invested our money in such a way that I can retire at 57 years old if I want to. I have insurance, Retirement accounts and other investments through Bruce and I’m about to set up a college fund for my grandson.

I highly recommend finding a fiduciary advisor who will work in your best interest rather than working with Mr. Allen and Old Dominion investments who work in their own best interest.

Mr. Allen gave consistently horrible investing advice, including advising us to avoid 401ks (a great, tax-advantaged option) in favor of non-tax-advantaged accounts under his control. He also recommended expensive (unusually high fee) investment vehicles with very low rates of return (and have high kickbacks). Overall, his advice seemed based on maximizing profits to himself rather than us.

On a more basic level, their investment strategy netted returns far below the market (eg 3% returns over 3 years, when a simple 90% stock, 10% bond portfolio would have netted 13.5% over the same timeframe). Expect to lose 1.5% of AUM to fees.

We were dealing with an IPO, and he confidently gave us false information about the process rather than admitting he didn’t know. We were also misled us about his fee structure in a way that made it sound like he took much less than he actually did.

On a more minor note, the user interface is atrocious.

When we transferred our assets to Vanguard, the representatives there were appalled at how PlanMember (Old Dominion’s parent organization) was not following basic industry (and FINRA) standards.

You will do much better with a robo advisor or just building your own simple index fund portfolio. Don’t throw away your money like we did!
